Two years ago, when the Denver Broncos traded for Russell Wilson, the thinking was that they had made themselves into Super Bowl contenders with one move.

But that isn’t exactly what happened, and now, after missing the playoffs in two seasons with Wilson, they have decided to release him.

It is now clear that the decision to trade for him was a massive mistake, and Warren Sharp outlined just how costly that decision has turned out to be for Broncos GM George Paton.

Denver gave up five draft picks and three players to the Seahawks to get Wilson, and it was a very steep price to pay for the then-33-year-old, a price that got even steeper when they quickly gave him a lucrative new contract.

One of those draft picks has turned into cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who made the Pro Bowl in 2023 as a rookie, and he’s a player Denver could’ve used right now.

The biggest reason why the Wilson trade didn’t work out is the fact the Broncos simply haven’t had the type of quality players around him they needed in order to make a serious run at the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

On the other hand, when they acquired another Hall of Fame signal-caller by the name of Peyton Manning in 2012, they did have players around him on both sides of the football who gave him lots of support.

Denver made the Super Bowl in just their second season with Manning and won it all during the 2015 season.

That success is now a distant memory, and Paton will have his work cut out for him as the Broncos go back into rebuilding mode.
