Mecole Hardman Explains Mindset During Super Bowl-Winning TD

The Kansas City Chiefs won their second Super Bowl championship in a row and their third in the last five seasons earlier this month when they overcame a 10-point deficit against the San Francisco 49ers.

The contest became an all-time nail-biter as it went into overtime, and with Kansas City needing a field goal to continue the game and a touchdown to win, quarterback Patrick Mahomes led a clutch drive for the ages that ended with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Mecole Hardman.

Hardman said shortly after the game that he blacked out when he scored that touchdown, and per NFL Network, when asked about the moment, he said he had “no recollection of what happened.”

Hardman is one of several young wideouts for the Chiefs who were unproven and seemingly unreliable during the regular season.

Tyreek Hill was long gone, as was JuJu Smith-Schuster, their most productive wideout in 2022, and they had to endure many dropped passes throughout this season, especially in critical situations.

But they reinvented themselves on the fly, going with a more conservative approach on offense while relying more on defense than ever before.

That defense prevented 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy from manufacturing a touchdown pass on his final offensive series in regulation and in overtime, and its pass rush stymied him just enough to hold his team in check.

Hardman, who was acquired at midseason from the New York Jets, only had 14 catches for 118 yards in six regular-season games for Kansas City, but he achieved every little kid’s dream by catching the Super Bowl-winning catch, and he will carry that on his belt for the rest of his life.
