Analyst Notes Mike Tomlin’s True Feelings About Russell Wilson

After longtime team owner Art Rooney II made it clear that he was sick of first-round playoff exits for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team’s brass immediately got to work when the NFL offseason started to find an answer to their quarterback problem.

As a result, the team brought in veteran quarterback and one-time Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson to be the new starting quarterback under center, with the team trading Kenny Pickett away to the Philadelphia Eagles, giving him a chance at a fresh start in the NFL.

Along with adding Wilson into the mix after his failed stint with the Denver Broncos, the Steelers traded for quarterback Justin Fields, who some believe will be able to compete for the starting job right away in training camp.

However, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic begs to differ as he believes head coach Mike Tomlin loves Wilson and fully intends to start him come Week 1 of the 2024 NFL regular season via The Pat McAfee Show.

“Mike Tomlin absolutely loves Russell Wilson,” Kaboly said. “Russell Wilson was brought in here for a reason and the reason is to start the season off.”

Much like the Broncos did when they traded for Wilson, the Steelers would be wise to start the veteran right out of the gate rather than turning to Fields unless there’s clearly a sizable gap between the two in training camp.

Obviously, Wilson will likely have a short leash in Pittsburgh with Fields right behind him, as Steelers fans and the media will be calling for a change if the veteran quarterback can’t get it done early in the season.
