Matthew Perry’s Ex-Fiancée Speaks Out After His Death: ‘He Was Complicated’

As fans are still coming to terms with the death of “Friends” actor Matthew Perry, his loved ones are commenting on his passing.

One such person is Molly Hurwitz, who got engaged to Perry in 2020. The couple broke up in June 2021. At the time of his death, Perry had never been married and had no children, though he did have an active dating life.

Hurwitz headed to Instagram to express her thoughts. She explained how, as his former fiancée, she “obviously knew that man in a very different way” than most others.

“While I loved him deeper than I could comprehend, he was complicated, and he caused pain like I’d never known,” she wrote alongside a photo of Perry standing in front of a window.

“No one in my adult life has had a more profound impact on me than Matthew Langford Perry. I have tremendous gratitude for that, for everything I learned from our relationship,” Hurwitz added.

“He would love that the world is talking about how talented he was. And he really was very talented,” she said.

The literary manager said that before the “Friends” reunion special, she and Perry sat down and re-watched the series together. She recalled Perry saying, “F***, I was so good!!!…See what I did there???”

She added, “We rewound and studied scenes. Our respect and appreciation of humor is something that connected us. Being with him as he rediscovered his brilliance was magical.”

Hurwitz also referenced Perry’s ongoing battle with alcohol and drug addiction, which he discussed at length in his memoir. “I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Al Anon, an invaluable resource for those who love someone struggling with this destructive disease,” she wrote in conclusion. “Matty, I feel relief that you are at peace.”

Perry died on Saturday at the age of 54. The actor died of an apparent drowning in a hot tub, but the official cause of death has been deferred until further toxicology results are available.

The remaining cast members of “Friends” issued a joint statement on the passing of their beloved colleague.

David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, and Matt LeBlanc said in a statement to PEOPLE on Monday, “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.”

“In time we will say more, as and when we are able,” the statement continued. “For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”
