Ex-SNL Comedian Slammed For Mocking Matthew Perry’s Death

As the world mourns the death of actor Matthew Perry, one comedian sparked outrage online by making fun of the way he died.

Ex-“SNL” writer Kevin Brennan posted several mocking messages on social media after news of Perry’s death broke on Saturday night. “DROWNED IN A HOT TUB. HAHAHAHA,” Brennan posted on X.

When one account questioned him, saying, “Why is drowning in a hot tub funny?” the comedian replied, “Because it’s not very deep.”

Brennan doubled down on his statements even after the backlash began. “I didn’t mock it,” he wrote as a response to a TMZ story. “I just thought it was funny. But I do love it when junkies die.”

The 63-year-old comedian hosts the “Misery Loves Company” podcast and seems to be reveling in all the negative attention. He posted to X on Sunday, writing, “Am I trending yet?”

Perry’s fans denounced Brennan’s remarks.

“Matthew Perry will be remembered and loved. No one will notice when you’re gone,” one account posted.

“It’s really sad when someone takes a tragedy and tries to gain popularity from it,” another observed.

“This man is mourned because he made us all laugh.  Something clearly no one will say the same for you when it’s your time,” another agreed.

Brennan is the older brother of Neal Brennan, comedian and co-creator of “Chappelle’s Show.”

Perry, 54, was found dead at his home in California on Saturday by first responders who were called over a possible cardiac arrest. The actor was best known for playing Chandler Bing on the iconic NBC comedy, “Friends,” from 1994 until 2004.

The actor had released a memoir one year ago titled “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.” The book documented Perry’s struggle with drug and alcohol addiction, including a near-death experience. He said he spent more than $9 million on various rehabs and programs in his efforts to get sober. The actor went to rehab 15 times and had 14 surgeries to repair the damage done to his body from years of drug use.

The star said he had been sober since May 2021.

No cause of death has been reported yet.
