McCarthy Will Not Run Again For House Speaker: Report

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) will reportedly not run again for Speaker of the House after being voted out of the position, the first time such an event has happened in U.S. history.

BREAKING NEWS — KEVIN MCCARTHY will not run for speaker again,” Punchbowl News reporter Jake Sherman said. “He is about to make the announcement in closed GOP meeting.”

Sherman said that in the closed door meeting that McCarthy did not want members to be angry over what happened and that he placed his trust in God.

He said that he had refused to try to save his speakership by working with House Democrats because it was not in the best interests of House Republicans.

He noted that the eight Republicans who voted with House Democrats — Reps. Matt Gaetz (FL), Andy Biggs (AZ), Ken Buck (CO), Eli Crane (AZ), Bob Good (VA), Matt Rosendale (MT), Tim Burchett (TN), and Nancy Mace (SC) — were not looking out for the best interests of the Republican Conference.

He encouraged the members to vote together when selecting the next House Speaker and to not drag out the process to 15 rounds like he had to go through.
