Murdaugh Court Clerk Accused Of Jury Tampering Speaks Out

The county clerk accused by convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh’s attorneys of tampering with the jury to get a book deal has spoken out and refuted the allegations.

Colleton County Clerk Rebecca Hill has been accused of urging jurors to “reach a quick guilty verdict” and even helping to remove a juror in order to ensure that Murdaugh was found guilty.

In a new episode of Fox Nation’s “The Fall of the House of Murdaugh,” however, Hill denied the allegations.

Hill hinted at the allegations that she pushed for a quick verdict by saying she thought it would only take the jury “45 minutes” to find Murdaugh guilty. The jury took several hours to reach the guilty verdict.

Murdaugh’s defense team also accused Hill of presenting false information to the judge to get a juror kicked off the panel because Hill thought that juror wouldn’t vote guilty. The defense team also alleged that Hill discussed Murdaugh’s guilt with jurors in an attempt to secure a conviction so she could get a book deal.

Specifically, the defense team argued that Hill falsely told Judge Clifton Newman that the female juror’s ex-husband had accused the juror in a Facebook post of getting drunk and talking about the case – even telling people she planned to vote not guilty. That juror was kicked off the panel on February 28, just before jury deliberations began. Hill wrote about the incident in the book she published.

Hill told Fox that the trial was challenging to manage, given the media attention it garnered, but insisted Murdaugh was indeed guilty, saying he must have murdered his wife and son in a “weird twisted way of love.”

Earlier this month, Hill also denied the allegations to the Greenville News, but did not give the outlet details. Her co-author Neil Gordon, however, has released a statement regarding the allegations.

“Overall, I would ask anyone following these alleged ‘jury tampering’ allegations to please reserve judgement until all the facts come out and all interviews are conducted by the proper, objective law enforcement authorities,” Gordon told the outlet in a statement. “Please remember in our society people are innocent until proven guilty. That basic tenet of our judicial system was there for Alex Murdaugh during his double-murder trial and should be in place for Becky Hill for accusations of jury tampering.”

The accusatory filing submitted by Murdaugh’s attorneys, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, cited at least three sworn affidavits, including one from a juror who decided Murdaugh’s fate and another who was dismissed. It also includes excerpts from Hill’s book, titled “Behind the Doors of Justice: The Murdaugh Murders,” which was published in August.

A jury found Murdaugh guilty of murder on March 2, and he was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences.
