Cardinals Rookie Used A Lucky Bat To Pick Up Key Hit
The St. Louis Cardinals may have picked up a little momentum to close out the month of August.
On Wednesday afternoon, they were down to their last strike against the San Diego Padres.
However, rookie shortstop Masyn Winn picked up a key double off of Padres closer Josh Hader to keep the Cardinals alive, and on a 1-1 pitch from Hader, Tommy Edman hit one into the Cardinals bullpen to secure a second consecutive comeback win.
Interestingly enough, Winn had a good luck charm in his final at-bat.
During his postgame interview, he revealed that Jordan Walker, who went 4-for-4, lent him his bat for his final plate appearance.
Masyn Winn on using Jordan Walker’s bat with two outs in the ninth inning: “I’ve been struggling a little bit. I saw him get four knocks. … I just walked up to him and said, ‘Hey, man. Mine’s not working. Let me see if yours has hits,’ and sure enough, it did.” #STLCards pic.twitter.com/FGCQkK1EEz

Walker and Winn are close friends, having come up through the Cardinals system together.
Walker had picked up four hits on Wednesday, falling just a triple short of the cycle.
Winn on the other hand, was hitless in three trips to the plate.
However, he had a solution for his struggles, and he sought out his best friend for some help.
Sure enough, Walker obliged, and Winn strolled to the plate with his friend’s bat.
Down 0-2 in the count to Hader, Winn stroked a ball out to left field and managed to reach second base, which set up Edman’s walk-off home run.
Sometimes, all it takes is a little luck, and this was certainly the case for Winn in the ninth inning on Wednesday.
The Cardinals have now won two consecutive games after losing four in a row and enter September with some momentum as they look to play the role of spoiler against contending teams.
