Throwing a perfect game in MLB is a rare accomplishment.

On Wednesday night, Domingo German of the New York Yankees became just the 24th pitcher to throw a perfecto in the history of the game.

The first game in the National League was played in 1876, so yes, you can do the math: there has been a perfect game every 6.125 years.

That’s how infrequent it is.

German completely dominated the Oakland Athletics and punched out nine of them on his way to the historic accomplishment.

The team raced towards the infield to embrace with the pitcher in a group hug and celebratory jumping.

It was a great scene.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone also talked about the achievement.

“‘I’m so proud of him. He’s been through so much. This has not been an easy week or time for him. For him to go out there and paint that masterpiece was really just a lot of fun to be able to watch.’ – Aaron Boone on Domingo Germán,” SNY tweeted, with quotes from the skipper.

Indeed, German has been at the center of the storm a lot of times in the past.

In 2019, he was suspended for a domestic violence incident.

This year, he was suspended for using foreign substances on the ball in a recent start.

Then June came along, and it was rough for him: he had conceded 15 runs in his last two starts before Wednesday’s.

Nobody thought he had a perfect game in him judging by the way he had been pitching this month.

That’s why baseball is so great, because it surprises us with completely unexpected occurrences every day.
