Officials Reveal Cause Of Death For Son Of Hall Of Fame Linebacker Ray Lewis: Report

Officials said over the weekend that 28-year-old Ray Lewis III, the son of Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis, died last week from an accidental drug overdose.

Lewis III started out his college football career at the University of Miami — where his father played — before transferring to Coastal Carolina in 2015 and later finishing at Virginia Union.

TMZ reported that police were called to a Florida home on Wednesday where they discovered Lewis III unresponsive next to a pill, a used needle, and a small plastic bag inside an empty alcohol container.

Police received a call for a medical emergency around 5:30 p.m. local time and found a friend giving him CPR on scene while another was “screaming for Narcan,” a drug used to save people who have overdosed on opioids, the report said.

Police administered Narcan in his right nostril but the effort did not yield any results.

“The evidence and witness accounts show this incident to be a tragic accident,” Casselberry Police Captain Michael Schaefer said in a statement. “Our sympathies go out to the Lewis family and friends.”

The Orlando Sentinel reported that his friends said that he had indicated that he had been “acting strange.”

The report added that the Medical Examiner’s Office would determine a cause of death.
