The Dallas Mavericks took a big risk when they traded for Kyrie Irving.

The prospect of pairing him with Luka Doncic was quite promising, but they gave up a lot to get a player with a history of insubordination and that had already bailed out on multiple franchises.

And now that he’s an unrestricted free agent, they seemed to be leading the race to re-sign him, but could still face some competition for his services.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Houston Rockets could enter his sweepstakes if they fail to convince James Harden to return.

The Rockets have Harden as their main offseason target, but there’s still a chance he decides to run it back in Philadephia, especially considering his relationship with GM Daryl Morey.

Should that be the case, then the Rockets would focus on prying Irving away from Luka Doncic and Mark Cuban.

The Los Angeles Lakers are also reportedly interested in signing the former NBA champion, who’s been vocal about his desire to team up with LeBron James again and vice versa.

However, having Kyrie in Los Angeles seems like an almost impossible task at the moment, as they lack the salary cap flexibility to offer him a max contract.

Irving has already won a championship and this might be his final chance to cash in on a very lucrative deal, so it seems like he’ll join the team that offers him the most money, especially if so many teams are hesitant to trust him with a long-term deal after all he’s been through.
