Two-Thirds Of Americans Say Biden Does Not Deserve Another Term As President

Over two thirds of Americans believe that President Joe Biden does not deserve another term in office.

The new CNN poll was conducted by SSRS throughout the month of March. The new numbers suggest that the improvement Biden saw after Democrats over-performed expectations in the 2022 elections may have backslid. The poll was almost entirely completed before news of former President Donald Trump’s indictment broke at the end of last month, so the poll is not a reflection of how Americans’ attitudes may have changed because of it.

Biden’s approval rating hit 42% with a disapproval rating of 57%. In January, those numbers were 45% and 55%, respectively. The difference is within the margin of error for the poll, however.

But with Americans who believe Biden deserves a second term in office, he is much further underwater. Less than a third, 32%, of Americans said that Biden deserved another term. That’s compared to 67% of respondents who said he did not. Biden fared a little better with registered voters, 36% of whom said Biden deserved another term compared to 61% who did not.

The majority of registered Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say that Biden should not run for another term. That cohort responded with 44% in favor of Biden as the Democratic Party’s 2024 nominee and 54% saying someone else should have the opportunity.

When asked about who should replace Biden, most Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (69%) did not have an answer beyond “just someone besides Joe Biden.” The top pick among those who specified someone else was Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders at 5%. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was second with 4% and Vice President Kamala Harris and former First Lady Michelle Obama tied for third at 3% each.

Biden’s overall unpopularity is reflected in his unpopularity among major issues. Biden’s approval rating on how he has handled major policy is underwater on every issue. On three issues, Biden’s approval rating is in the 30s: the economy is 37% approve to 62% disapprove, immigration is 35% to 63%, and gun policy is 37% to 62%. Biden’s best issue is environmental policy, though he is still underwater at 46% to 52%.

Biden has not formally announced a reelection bid for 2024, though he is reportedly telling allies that his anticipated announcement is a question of when, not if. “I am definitely running,” he told one elected official several weeks ago, according to CNN.
