Walmart will close its Mayfield Heights store in May; 2nd Ohio store closing this year

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio — The Walmart on Mayfield Road east of Interstate 271 will close in May, according to an announcement from the company.

A Walmart spokesperson told cleveland.com Tuesday that the store at 6594 Mayfield Road would close. The company said the decision was made after a review process determined it was underperforming financially.

The Mayfield Heights location, which opened in 2004, will close May 20. A spokesperson said all 187 employees will be eligible for transfer to other stores.

It’s the second Ohio Walmart that the company will close in 2022. A Cincinnati location that employs the same number of people will close on Friday.

“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our Mayfield Heights location,” regional spokesperson Felicia McCranie said in an email. “We look forward to serving them at our other stores in the surrounding communities and on walmart.com.”

The company still has 172 Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs in Ohio. According to the Ohio Department of Development’s top employers list in December, Walmart was Ohio’s largest employer with 53,000 workers.

Walmart said there’s still thousands of people employed in the Greater Cleveland area at 21 Walmart stores.
