Event recognizes ‘good trouble’ in Lima

LIMA — Lima had its chance to recognize some “good trouble” on Sunday night, as the second annual John Lewis Recognition Day celebrated the life and legacy of the former congressman, who died in 2020.

Lewis was a key player in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, working with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Lima 6th Ward Councilor Derry Glenn created Sunday’s second annual event at the City Club in Lima to celebrate that spirit here in Lima.

“You see all the rich talent we have here in every possible corner, any type of skill, grown here,” said Vickie Shurelds, of Heir Force Community School in Lima. “What we have to do as a community is be supportive of those who come forward.”

The keynote speaker for the event was Chelsea Clark, a business owner and Forest Park City Councilwoman. Clark grew up in Lima, graduating from Elida High School. She was introduced by her mother, Regina Freeman.

Clark spoke on the important history of voting rights in this country, going back to the 1860s and the Civil War. Clark is running for Ohio secretary of state, a position that oversees elections and business filings.

The two recipients of the “Good Trouble Award” were Dr. Nanette Smith, who is on the cabinet of Rhodes State College in Lima, and community leader Jackie Robinson. Glenn introduced both of them and gave them plaques displaying the honor.

The event included music, dance, speeches and food. Shurelds was the master of ceremonies. In between introducing the different speakers and performers, Shurelds shared facts on the many tools and machines used daily that were invented by Black inventors.

Two of her eighth-grade students, Deanna Callahan and Omatayo Awe, read historical details on Billie Holiday and Lewis. Karrie Lester sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” while the audience stood. Linda K. Scott Nkowe shared an interpretive dance to music. Erica Stapleton sang the song “Precious Lord.”
