Walsh baseball beats Akron Connor Curry leads Malone men’s golf to win
It was a very happy birthday for Walsh baseball head coach Tim Mead on Wednesday.
Mead spent the afternoon at Akron’s Skeeles Field and watched the Cavaliers take down the NCAA Division I Zips 9-3.
Walsh broke open the game with a four-run ninth inning. Cobe Hutchison, Brenden Spaulding, Alec Debruler and Cam Kaiser all had RBIs in the inning.
Spaulding had two hits and three RBIs for the Cavs, who improved to 14-7. Walsh has won seven of its last eight games.
Malone, Walsh win golf invitationals
A final-round comeback led by medalist Connor Curry helped the Malone men’s golf team to a win at the Malone Spring Classic at Tannenhauf.
Trailing by five strokes, the Pioneers shot a final-round 284 to finish the tournament with a 595. West Liberty was second with a 614.
Curry fired a final-round 68 to finish with a 36-hole total of 143. He birdied five holes on the back nine.

The 68 was the second-lowest score of Curry’s career and the lowest score for the Pioneers this season.
Walsh earned the team title at the Cav Classic at Glenmoor. The Cavaliers finished with a three-round total of 868, four strokes ahead of Malone.
Walsh’s Brandon Jatich was runner-up with a 212 (71-70-71). He finished one stroke behind medalist Thomas Hursey of Ferris State.
Mount Union men’s volleyball set for postseason
The Mount Union men’s volleyball team will carry an 18-match winning streak into the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League Tournament which starts Friday in St. Louis.

The second-seeded Purple Raiders will face third-seeded Mount St. Joseph in the first semifinal. Top-seeded Fontbonne will meet fourth-seeded Trine in the second match.
Fontbonne handed the Purple Raiders their only two losses of the season in February.

• Senior thrower Jeremiah Gyulai is the Ohio Athletic Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. Gyulai won the javelin and discus at the Polar Bear Invitational. He had throws of 175 feet, 9 inches in the javelin and 138-8 in the discus.
• Senior Maggie Dominick is the OAC Softball Hitter of the Week. Dominick hit .688 (11-for-16) with seven RBIs during the Purple Raiders’ weekend series against Ohio Northern. This is the third straight week a Mount Union player has been named the conference’s hitter of the week.
• Senior Madelin DiBease recorded her 1,000th kill career during the women’s volleyball team’s weekend series at Heidelberg.

• Junior Kelsey Byers is the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. Byers threw all 26 innings in doubleheaders against Tiffin and Findlay and led Malone to a 3-1 record. She struck out 28 and walked just one.

• Junior Alex Medina is the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. Medina improved to 5-0 at No. 5 singles with a three-set victory against Tiffin. He also teamed up with Jacob Riglewski for a win at No. 1 doubles.
