If you were building an NFL team from scratch with the hope of winning the Super Bowl right now, which cornerback would you want most on that team?

There are a number of standout corners throughout the league right now, but there is a feeling that the best one was merely a rookie this past season.

Sauce Gardner of the New York Jets made the top of the list of the cornerbacks Bucky Brooks and Daniel Jeremiah would want to draft among those currently in the league, per the NFL on Twitter.

Gardner was the No. 4 pick in last year’s draft after blossoming at the University of Cincinnati, especially during his third and final season there, which saw him win the AAC Defensive Player of the Year award.

In 2022, he had an NFL-high 20 passes defended, and he was not only named to both the Pro Bowl and All-Pro first-team, but he was also named the Defensive Rookie of the Year.

He transformed what had been a pitiful Jets defense the year before into one that ranked fourth in points and total yards given up.

For this coming season, the team has an optimism it hasn’t really had in decades after the blockbuster trade that brought future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers to town.

But that optimism also stems from the fact that Gardner has helped New York become a rock-solid defensive squad.

Suddenly, the team has legitimate Super Bowl hopes, and with all the talent across the AFC, whatever success they will have will start on the defensive side of the football.
