Bears Are Planning To Extend Key Defender’s Contract
Ahead of the NFL trade deadline, the Washington Commanders were major sellers, with the storied franchise knowing that this season is more or less a lost cause and that it was time to move on from players whom the team could get a good return for on the trade market.
As a result of that mindset from the Commanders, Washington sent two of their best defensive players elsewhere, with the team trading defensive ends Chase Young to the San Francisco 49ers and Montz Sweat to the Chicago Bears.
Although the Bears are in a similar position to the Commanders, Chicago potentially feels like they’re a team on the cusp of figuring things out and would rather have proven players at a discount than go back to the NFL Draft to fill key positions.
It seems that the Bears like the acquisition of Sweat so much that the team is prepared to sign him to a long-term extension to keep him in Chicago for the foreseeable future, according to Dov Kleiman.
Update: #Bears are currently working on signing new DE Montz Sweat to a long-term extension after trading for him from the #Commanders, per the team. https://t.co/mkLdMamseohttps://t.co/BKzcauMG5t pic.twitter.com/LGsz4ilRQd

The Bears sacrificing a second-round pick in next year’s draft says a lot about what they think about Sweat and his potential to be a significant piece to the puzzle for Chicago defensively.
Unfortunately for Chicago, this season appears to be a lost cause as well, with the team currently sporting a disappointing record of 2-6 heading into a matchup on the road against the New Orleans Saints.
It’ll be interesting to see what they get out of Sweat moving forward and whether he turns out to be a game-changer for the struggling franchise.
