Padres Insider Reveals Latest Manager Search Update
The San Diego Padres entered the offseason with a manager in Bob Melvin.
The World Series is still being played, and they let the San Francisco Giants hire Melvin off their hands.
It became evident, at one point, that the Padres didn’t really want Melvin back after they finished 2023 out of the playoffs and barely with a positive record.
It also became clear that Melvin wasn’t entirely sold on returning to San Diego.
At the end of the day, everybody was happy with the outcome of the situation.
The Padres, however, have to look for a new skipper, and they do have some candidates lined up already.
A team insider reported the latest on their managerial search.
“Benji Gil, Phil Nevin and Eric Chavez are among the external candidates who are in various stages of the interview process for the Padres’ managerial opening, sources tell @Britt_Ghiroli and me. Mike Shildt and Ryan Flaherty continued to be viewed as the favorites for the job,” Padres insider Dennis Lin tweeted.

Gil is perhaps the least experienced of the group.
He is currently an infield coach for the Los Angeles Angels, but does have some experience as a manager: he led the Tomateros de Culiacán of the Mexican Pacific League and the Mexico national baseball team in the 2020 Summer Olympics and the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
Nevin was a third base coach for the Yankees before landing the manager job with the Angels in 2022.
He retained the position for the whole 2023 campaign but it has already been announced he won’t come back in 2024.
Chavez is the New York Mets’ bench coach.
The primary candidates to take over the job are internal: Ryan Flaherty, who is the current bench coach, and Mike Shildt, the team’s Senior Advisor to Player Development & Major Leagues.
A decision should come in the next few days.
