After winning each of their first five games of the NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers are now in the midst of a three-game losing streak after falling to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

It has led to them being dismissed by some as pretenders, and some are now saying that the excellent play quarterback Brock Purdy displayed until recently was at least somewhat of a fluke.

On Sunday, Purdy threw two interceptions for the second straight game, one of which quickly led to a touchdown pass by Joe Burrow that put Cincinnati up by 14 early in the fourth quarter.

But Chris Broussard said on “First Things First” that Niners fans shouldn’t panic and that the team is still elite.

While Purdy had those two interceptions, as well as a fumble with just under two minutes left, other than that he played well, completing 22 of 31 pass attempts for 365 yards while also adding 57 yards on the ground.

One factor in the Niners’ losing streak has been an ankle injury that has kept Trent Williams out of their last two games and hampered him in Week 6 versus the Cleveland Browns.

Williams is one of the game’s best left tackles, and without him, Purdy hasn’t had the protection he enjoyed in the past.

As Broussard also pointed out, San Francisco’s running game has dried up lately, although Christian McCaffrey did average a robust 4.5 yards per carry versus the Bengals.

It should be pointed out that last year at this time, the Niners were just 4-4 and would end the regular season with a 10-game winning streak, and the year before that, they were also 3-5 before winning seven of their last nine regular-season contests.
