Fred VanVleet was a key member of the Toronto Raptors‘ 2019 NBA championship-winning roster.

He impressed many by playing a supporting role to the likes of Kawhi Leonard, Kyle Lowry, and Pascal Siakam.

Over the next few seasons, VanVleet established himself as one of the better scorers on the Raptors, but his journey with the organization finally came to an end earlier this offseason.

VanVleet signed a massive three-year, $128.5 million contract with a team option during his final year of the contract.

During the Rockets’ 2023 Media Day, VanVleet explained his decision to join the team, via SportsTalk 790 on Twitter.

VanVleet explained he was pretty relaxed throughout the process of leaving the Raptors and joining the Rockets until he had to make the actual decision.

Considering he spent seven seasons playing for the Raptors, it’s no surprise that it was difficult for VanVleet to finally leave the team.

But in hindsight, it was a great decision as he wanted to start a new chapter in his career.

Not only will he be making more than $40 million a year, but he will truly be the primary star on the team, at least for now.

VanVleet will also be required to be a mentor to the young players on the Rockets team.

All things considered, VanVleet’s move to the Rockets has the potential to be great for both parties.

Now, the biggest question remains: can he lead the Rockets back to the playoffs?

If he can, it will be considered a success on his part for the 2023-24 season.
