Louis Riddick Says Jerry Jones Made A ‘Calculated’ Move With Trey Lance

The Dallas Cowboys made a splash on Friday when they sent a fourth-round draft pick to the San Francisco 49ers to acquire quarterback Trey Lance.

In two NFL seasons, Lance has barely played, partly due to injury, but he is still thought to have lots of potential.

Some feel the move was made in order to put pressure on Dak Prescott, the Cowboys’ starting QB, to play better, and that Lance could even be a possible replacement for Prescott.

Former NFL player Louis Riddick says that acquiring Lance, especially without telling Prescott or head coach Mike McCarthy, was a calculated move by owner Jerry Jones, via NFL on ESPN.

Lance was the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and he began last season as the 49ers’ starter until a severe ankle injury in Week 2 ended his season.

He played well at times during the preseason, but Brock Purdy, their incumbent starter, is clearly more ready and polished right now, and given that they’re in win-now mode, they decided to go with Purdy rather than develop Lance.

As a result, Lance was relegated to the third spot behind QB2 Sam Darnold.

In Dallas, Lance may still be the QB3 behind Prescott and Cooper Rush, but he could give the team an option moving forward.

Prescott has been a fine signal-caller in his seven pro seasons, but he has been criticized for not rising to the occasion during the playoffs.

He led the league with 15 interceptions last season despite playing in only 12 games, and he threw two picks in the Cowboys’ playoff loss to the 49ers.

The Cowboys are not like most teams, and after winning 12 games in each of the last two seasons, nothing but a Super Bowl title will satisfy their high and mighty fans.

If Prescott isn’t up to the task of winning it all, perhaps it will be time for the team to move on from him.
