Nick Wright Talks About Potential Trey Lance Bounce-Back
After naming Sam Darnold their second-string quarterback, the San Francisco 49ers are reportedly at least considering trading quarterback Trey Lance, who is now their third-stringer.
Lance was the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and the 49ers gave up a lot of capital in order to be able to draft him.
But Lance hasn’t panned out, at least not yet, mostly because he hasn’t gotten a lot of reps on the field during actual games.
Commentator Nick Wright says that while he’s not ready to give up on Lance, he’s not the least bit convinced the North Dakota State University product has what it takes to be a good NFL QB.
“I have no reason to believe Trey Lance is great. I don’t even have evidence that he’s good. But for a player who was drafted at 20 years old & has less than 500 pass attempts, college & pro combined, I’m not ready to write him off.”

After getting only spot duty as a rookie, Lance was named the starter ahead of last season over veteran Jimmy Garoppolo — only to see his year end prematurely in Week 2 due to a severe ankle injury.
So far in this year’s preseason, his first game was a mixed bag, but he did very well last weekend versus the Denver Broncos, getting hot down the stretch and leading the Niners to a clutch 21-20 win.
But it is beyond clear that it is Brock Purdy’s team now.
Purdy, the last player taken in the 2022 draft, took over as the starter in Week 13 of 2022 after Garoppolo went down with a season-ending injury of his own, and he did extremely well from that point on.
He made sure San Francisco ended the schedule with a 10-game winning streak and led them to the NFC Championship Game while putting up numbers that rivaled those of almost any elite QB.
Perhaps the Niners shouldn’t rush to trade Lance, but assuming they end up dealing him, they need to recoup as much of the capital they gave up to get him in the first place as possible.
