The Detroit Pistons didn’t find much luck in the NBA Draft Lottery this season, falling all the way to the No. 5 spot.

Notably, they landed a potential star in Ausar Thompson, but they now have a bit of a talent logjam in the backcourt.

That’s why former No. 1 pick Cade Cunningham is making sure not to get caught behind, looking sharp in his offseason workouts as he works his way back to the court in a video shared by Overtime (via Jefe Island).

Cunningham’s career got off to a somewhat slow start, but he was one of the most impressive young players in the game once he got his legs back under him.

The Pistons looked like a play-in team with him on the court last year until he suffered a season-ending injury, leading Jaden Ivey alone in the backcourt.

There’s absolutely no reason to think his starting job is in jeopardy by any means, as he’s still the most talented player on the roster and the centerpiece of the franchise, but he can’t take any chances with the plethora of talented young guards they have now.

Cunningham is a perennial triple-double threat, a guy that can fill the stat sheet on any given night, and the kind of player you’d want to build your franchise around.

The third year is usually when young players break out and take that major leap forward, and there are high expectations for Cunningham under Monty Williams’ tutelage, which is why it’s so nice to see that he’s seemingly back to full strength and ready to go.
