On Monday, three of the NFL‘s top running backs were facing a deadline to sign long-term contract extensions with their respective teams due to the fact they were franchise tagged by those teams.

Unfortunately for those three players, not one was able to agree to a new deal with their team, which was a little surprising as it sent some shockwaves throughout the league that running backs are officially not as highly valued as they used to be.

Now Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, and Tony Pollard will all have to play the upcoming 2023 NFL season on a franchise tag worth a little over $10 million.

The New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, and Dallas Cowboys were all unwilling to commit to these stars beyond next season, and that lit a fire under former superstar running back LeSean McCoy, who defended backs in the league on “Speak” on FS1.

McCoy isn’t the only one that was livid about the way his old position is getting treated in the NFL, as some current backs that have already been paid in the past have shown their support for those not getting some long-term security.

Derrick Henry and Christian McCaffrey are among the notable current star backs in the league that had something to say about the state of the running back today, as they also don’t like how things are trending in the NFL.

The real question from here on out is whether this will continue to be the case, as it could result in many star players being unhappy moving forward.
