The New York Mets had to be unsure what they would get out of Kodai Senga in his first season in MLB.

He spent the last 11 seasons pitching in Japan before signing his MLB contract with the Mets.

Yet it appears the transition to the new league has been no problem for Senga.

He has been the Mets’ best starting pitcher this season and that is on a staff with Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander.

SNY Mets detailed just how good Senga has been this season and how his stats compare with other NL starters.

He is first in opponent batting average, eighth in strikeouts, and 10th in ERA.

While Senga did not make the All-Star team, he has a strong case to be an injury replacement.

His season stats include a 7-5 record with a 3.31 ERA.

He has thrown 89.2 innings with 113 strikeouts.

The only spot where Senga has struggled is with command.

He leads the NL in walks allowed with 47 which is far too many in 89.2 innings.

Even still, when Senga is throwing strikes he can be one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball.

The Mets are not having the season they hoped for.

After winning 101 games last season the Mets are 40-46 through the first 86 of this year.

Unless they can go on a big winning streak the chances of them making the playoffs are slim.

Yet how they play in July will have a major role in what they do at the trade deadline.

If they are in striking distance of a Wild Card spot they might be buyers.

But if they continue to lose series after series this Mets team may look much different over the last few months.
