Here are the top three stories in Avon-Avon Lake today:

  1. Get ready to make a detour! Some of you may have already noticed that Moore Road is closed to Northbound traffic from the Pin Oak Parkway to Walker Road as the road is one way only in the construction area. According to a Facebook post on the city of Avon Lake’s page, Southbound traffic is using the Northbound lane. This project will continue through late fall. Drivers are instructed to seek alternative routes and avoid the area. State Route 83/Avon Belden Road: Preparation work for the culvert replacement at the culvert (near Avon Lake High School) will continue. One lane will remain open. *NOTE: Starting June 13, State Route 83/Avon Belden Road will be CLOSED at the culvert. Please seek an alternate route and avoid the area. Webber Road: Resurfacing work will continue. If possible, please seek an alternate route and avoid the area. (City of Avon Lake, OH via Facebook)
  2. Are more guns the answer? According to a Cleveland 19 News story, “following the tragedy in Texas, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine called on the general assembly to pass a bill that would allow local school districts to arm staff members in schools. Technically Ohio teachers could already carry guns, but before HB 199, school staff had to complete 737 hours of peace officer training. The bill reduces that to just 24 hours of training. The legislation allows each school district to set its own policies, so it can also require additional training. Representative Thomas Hall sponsored the bill. He said he thinks it’s important to have “good guys with guns” to stop the bad guys, but many school districts, including Westlake City Schools, believe the dangers of arming teachers outweigh the benefits. The Avon Lake Superintendent said it is definitely not considering this. Akron schools said it has no plans to do it. (Cleveland 19 News)
