AMD Phoenix RDNA3 iGPU could be as fast as the slowest GeForce RTX 3060 mobile

Please note that this post is tagged as a rumor.

AMD Phoenix APU with mid-range discrete GPU performance

Greymon55 claims that the upcoming integrated graphics into the AMD Phoenix APU, could show comparable performance to the most power-restricted version of the RTX 3060 mobile.

AMD Ryzen 7000 series will officially include two mobile series: Dragon Range for high-performance laptop and Phoenix for thin and light designs. The latter is now expected to feature RDNA3 graphics architecture combined with Zen4 compute cores.

The Phoenix APUs will operate in the 35 to 45W range, which probably means Ryzen 7000HS and 7000H series. This power is not just for the graphics, though, but also for the Zen4 cores and other integrated logic. That said, Greymon’s claims that integrated RDNA3 GPU could alone offer RTX 3060M at 60W (formerly referred to as Max-Q) performance would be big news for ‘light’ gaming.

One should note that 60W version of the RTX 3060 is not very popular in the latest designs, but it can be found in laptops such as ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 from 2021, and even there it supports Dynamic Boost (+20W), so a side-by-side comparison may be hard. Nevertheless, RTX 3060M class-GPU with such a limited power is at worst 30% slower than the fully unlocked variant. It ships with a GPU clock in 817-1282 MHz range, which is considerably less than the fastest 1702 MHz clock for the 115W variant.

Meanwhile, AMD Ryzen integrated RDNA graphics already ship with 2.4 GHz clocks (Ryzen 9 6900HS). AMD Phoenix iGPU will use 5 nm process technology and further optimizations that could potentially make the iGPU clock even higher. Thus, Phoenix RDNA3 iGPU does not necessarily have to have as many shaders as RTX 3060, they just need to be faster.

NVIDIA was targeting ‘ultra’ quality 1080p gaming with their RTX 3060 laptops. For sure, included DLSS support paid a role in 3060M popularity, but AMD has since then released its FSR super-resolution technology and may soon offer similar performance with laptops that don’t even have discrete GPUs.
