SPORTS: USD, SDSU women advance; Ohio State women win ‘Frozen Four’; Twins sign a pitcher

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Here’s your Monday morning sports!

*South Dakota women’s basketball led wire-to-wire in a 61-47 win over No. 2 seed Baylor in Waco, Texas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament yesterday.

They advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.

The Coyotes play the winner of third-seeded Michigan and 11th-seeded Villanova next Saturday in Wichita, Kansas.

*The South Dakota State University women also won their second-round game in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament yesterday.

They defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers 78 to 57 in Brookings.

The Jacks will face the winner of Drake and Northern Iowa in the next round.

*Kenzie Hauswirth broke a tie with 6:20 left and top-seeded Ohio State beat Minnesota Duluth 3-2 on yesterday.

It’s the Buckeyes’ first women’s Frozen Four hockey championship.

*The Minnesota Twins and right-handed reliever Joe Smith have finalized a one-year contract.

The move gives Minnesota a veteran arm for a bullpen in need of more depth.
