Fairview Park City Schools outdoor Super Pops Concert set for May 8

FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio — After the majority of the last year was filled with silence, music once again can be heard throughout the Fairview Park City Schools.

This includes the return of the district’s Super Pops Concert, which takes place Saturday (May 8) afternoon on the Fairview Park High School lawn in front of the auditorium.

“After this year of very limited performances, it’ll be wonderful for the students to get to perform outside for their family in a socially distant setting,” Fairview Park City Schools Director of Orchestras Hillery Needham said.

“Performing is such an important part of our music education programs here at Fairview Park City Schools. The students are looking forward to sharing their music with the community.”

The Super Pops Concert concert schedule includes Gilles Sweet 5th Grade Band (noon), 5th Grade Orchestra (12:20 p.m.), 6th Grade Band (12:40 p.m.), 6th Grade Orchestra (1 p.m.), Grades 7-8 Concert Band (1:20 p.m.) Grades 7-8 Concert Orchestra (1:40 p.m.), High School Symphonic Band (2 p.m.), High School Chamber Orchestra (2:30 p.m.), High School String Orchestra – Senior Recognition (2:50 p.m.), Gilles Sweet Golden Singers (3:30 p.m.), 6th Grade Glee Club (3:50 p.m.), Grades 7-8 Concert Choir (4:10 p.m.), High School Scarlet Singers (4:30 p.m.) and High School Chorale (4:50 p.m.).

The event marks the return of Fairview Park City Schools’ annual music department fundraiser, which features a 50/50 raffle, drinks and some snacks available for purchase from the Fairview Park Music and Theatre Association.

Families are asked to bring lawn chairs and blankets with mask-wearing and social distancing required. If it rains, the Super Pops Concert will be moved into the Fairview Park High School auditorium.

“We’re really excited,” Fairview Park City Schools Director of Bands Peter Cibulskas said. “Everybody is looking forward to actually hearing the kids play together and having a little bit of normalcy come back.”

This is in stark contrast to parts of the last year where students were playing individually at home while the district was in remote learning due to the pandemic.

Cibulskas noted while some kids did perform on their front porch for families and neighbors, the Super Pops Concert will act as a return of performing together for a live audience.

“For most of the kids, music is one of the best parts of their day,” Cibulskas said. “They enjoy coming together, creating something as a whole group and making something they can be proud of.

“With this event, we’re hoping to get a little outdoor community concert feel going. Families are really happy to be able to have their kids perform in this kind of atmosphere again.”
