Revere senior Zayne Lehman commits to wrestle at Ohio University
Revere senior Zayne Lehman has committed to wrestle at Ohio University.
Lehman finished his Revere career with a Division II state championship victory at 182 pounds by defeating Carter Neves of St. Paris Graham Local 3-1.
“I feel like Ohio University is the best fit for me,” Lehman said. “It feels like home when I step on campus, and I feel like that is a place where I can go right into and make an impact right away and try to win a national title.”
Lehman, who is 6-foot, compiled a 47-2 record as a senior and a 129-38 record in four seasons at Revere. He has a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and also played running back and linebacker on Revere’s football team as a junior and senior.
“We are really excited for this opportunity,” Revere wrestling coach Dan Mosher said of Lehman’s decision to go to OU.
“He was looking at several different universities. Most of them were MAC schools, and for him to pick Ohio, that has got a pretty good tradition as far as wrestling is concerned, and it is just a couple of hours down the road. We are pretty excited that he is going to get this opportunity.”
Lehman wrestled at 138 pounds as a freshman, 152 pounds as a sophomore and 170 pounds as a junior. He was a Division II district qualifier all four years, and also qualified for the state tournament as a junior, but the tjournament was canceled because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“The biggest thing that allowed Zayne to achieve a state championship is the work ethic that he developed over the last four years,” Mosher said. “He came in as a freshman and really loved the sport, but I would say these last couple of years he has put a lot more work in than when he was in eighth grade or in his freshman year. Seeing that maturity growing in him to understand the level of commitment that was required to achieve something that great was pretty cool to see.”
Mosher said Lehman battled injuries to record 129 victories, which puts him third on Revere’s career wins list. Lehman’s older brother, Revere 2015 graduate Zack Lehman, is atop the list with 144 wins and current senior Nick Gayner is second with 143 wins.
Zayne Lehman finished tied for third with current senior Cooper Krauth on Revere’s career pins list with 63. Zeck Lehman is atop that list, too, with 94 pins and 2013 Revere graduate Stephen Suglio with 78 pins.
Zeck Lehman finished third in the Division II state tournament at 170 in 2014 and fifth at 182 in 2015, and was a Division III All-American at Baldwin Wallace University. Suglio was a Division II state runner-up at 182 in 2013 and was a Division I national tournament qualifier at Kent State.
“I feel like I got better and better each year all around and I peaked at the right time this year,” Zayne Lehman said. “I was wrestling my best at the state tournament. Over these last four years, I have grown tremendously with the help of coach, my brother and the coaches that coach Mosher has on his staff.”
