NYC’s largest city workers’ union backs Eric Adams for mayor

The city’s largest municipal workers’ union, District Council 37, announced Wednesday it’s backing Eric Adams for mayor and Corey Johnson for comptroller.

It’s the second major labor endorsement picked up by Adams, the Brooklyn borough president and ex-cop.

Last week, he won the support of the Hotel Trades Council.

DC 37 represents 150,000 workers and 50,000 retirees.

Johnson, the city council speaker who withdrew his bid for mayor last year while struggling with depression during the coronavirus pandemic, just entered the comptroller’s race on Tuesday.

The Democratic primary for mayor will be held on June 22 and unions are beginning to take sides.

Another powerful union, SEIU Local 1199 representing health care workers, endorsed Maya Wiley, a civil rights lawyer and former prosecutor who served as legal counsel to Mayor de Blasio.

City Comptroller and mayoral candidate Scott Stringer has the support of the Building Trades Council of Greater New York and Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union.

But a recent survey found Andrew Yang, who has not secured major union support, as the front-runner in the race.

Yang was the top pick to lead the Big Apple for 32 percent of the 644 likely Democratic voters who responded to a WPIX-TV/NewsNation/Emerson College poll that was released Monday.

Adams was the second top candidate, garnering 19 percent of the likely voters.

Wiley notched 9 percent support and Stringer 6 percent the poll said.
