Australian national arrested for alleged possession of psychedelic drug DMT

An Australian national has been named a suspect for alleged possession of a psychedelic drug known as DMT, after police seized 990 grams of the narcotics during his arrest in North Kuta last month.

“The Bali chapter of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) arrested an Australian national with the initials DC for possession of DMT narcotics,” Putu Agus Arjaya, an official from the agency, told reporters yesterday.

DC was arrested on Jl. Bumbak Dauh in North Kuta district on Jan. 22, with police saying that he had a package of brown paste on his person at the time, which was suspected to be illegal narcotics. 

After questioning, the suspect reportedly told authorities that it was DMT, which he used for medicinal purposes. The psychedelic drug, which is sometimes referred to as a “spirit molecule,” is classified as a Category I illegal drug in Indonesia, on par with heroin, cocaine, and marijuana.

“The item was sent from Peru with a delivery service. The DMT was packaged in a paste that resembles dodol,” Putu said, referring to the popular chewy and sweet confection in Southeast Asia.

Under Indonesia’s drug laws, DC faces a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison.
