Ohio among worst states for traffic safety laws according to new report – WHIO TV 7 and

DAYTON — A new report by Advocates for Highway and Public Safety rated Ohio among the 11 worst states when it comes to traffic safety laws.

According to the report, states receive a red rating if they have fewer than seven laws and are missing both primary enforcement front and rear seat belt laws.

This comes as traffic deaths go up across Ohio and the country.

In 2021, nationwide traffic deaths were up 20 percent compared to 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Other laws the report says Ohio is missing include prohibiting text messaging for all drivers, requiring all riders on a motorcycle to wear a helmet and requiring all offenders to install an ignition interlock after a drunk driving offense.

Advocates for Highway and Public Safety said their mission is to help prevent motor vehicle crashes, save lives, reduce injuries and contain costs.
