Owens Corning starts work on Heath warehouse to serve Newark plant.
Work has started on a 750,000-square-foot warehouse in Heath that will be occupied by Owens Corning, as the manufacturer looks to consolidate much of its central Ohio warehouse space to serve its Newark factory.
VanTrust Real Estate, a Kansas City, Missouri, company with offices in Columbus, is developing the site, at 840 Thornwood Drive on the West Side of the city. VanTrust broke ground last month on the warehouse and expects to be finished by the end of the year.
“We occupied several distribution warehouses in the general area but realized that it was an economic advantage to update our supply chain with one large distribution center,” Owens Corning real estate executive Jim Eckart said in a news release.
“VanTrust put together a package that included an excellent building site that was large enough for a modern warehouse, was within our budget, and that was convenient to our plant in Newark.”
Owens Corning manufactures fiberglass insulation and roof shingles, among other products, at the Newark plant.
The city of Heath has approved a 15 year, 100% tax exemption for improvements to the site, according to the Newark Advocate. In exchange, the property owner must pay $105,000 a year for the 15 years of the agreement, for a total of $1.575 million. The money will help pay for improvements to Thornwood Drive and Central Parkway.
“We worked quickly to identify a build-to-suit site for the project and through the partnership with the city, we were able to turn a piece of farmland into a modern 750,000-square-foot warehouse,” Phil Rasey, vice president of development at VanTrust, said in a news release.
