Judge Rules Trump Ineligible to Appear on Illinois Ballot Under 14th Amendment

An Illinois judge on Wednesday ordered former President Donald Trump’s removal from the ballot under the 14th Amendment, following in the footsteps of Colorado and Maine.

Cook County Circuit Judge Tracie Porter paused the order to allow for Trump’s appeal, CNN reported. The Colorado case is currently before the Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments earlier this month but has not yet issued a ruling on the matter.

In December of last year, the Colorado Supreme Court determined that Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot rendered him ineligible under the amendment, which contains a clause barring those who engaged in an “insurrection” against the U.S. from holding high office.

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows followed the court’s lead and issued her own determination that Trump was ineligible to appear on that state’s ballot, which Trump has also challenged. A judge in January deferred judgement in the matter until the Supreme Court ruled on the Colorado dispute, a decision the Maine Supreme Court upheld.
