Analyst Says 1 QB’s Stock Can Rise The Most During Combine

Many in football are excited about this year’s draft class because of several potential-laden quarterbacks who could turn out to be special.

Leading that class is University of Southern California signal-caller Caleb Williams, who is expected to be the first player chosen, and right behind him are Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye.

But sometimes, a lesser-known quarterback will see his stock rise considerably coming out of the annual NFL Draft Combine, which began on Monday.

Bucky Brooks said on NFL Total Access that J.J. McCarthy of the University of Michigan could impress some scouts.

“The thing about J.J. McCarthy performing at the Combine, he not necessarily can confirm that he can throw it, but he can tease us with the arm talent,” Brooks said.

In three seasons with the Wolverines, McCarthy had a sterling 27-1 record, and Jim Harbaugh, who was his head coach there, has raved about his abilities, calling him the greatest QB in school history, something Tom Brady, himself a former Wolverine, agreed with.

McCarthy was a full-time starter over the last two seasons, and during that time, he threw 44 touchdown passes against just nine interceptions, and he completed 72.3 percent of his pass attempts in 2023.

He was named the offensive MVP of this year’s Rose Bowl, and after that, he led Michigan to a victory in the College Football Playoff National Championship over the University of Washington.

He likely won’t go in the first five or six picks of April’s draft, but a number of teams who are picking afterward could use a player such as him.
