For many years, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick seemed untouchable, and it looked like he would spend the rest of his football career in New England.

But with the team struggling to the tune of a 2-6 record, suddenly there is speculation that he could either be fired or walk away at the end of this season.

If Belichick does decide to leave the team that has employed him for over 20 years, there are sure to be multiple suitors for his services.

One possibility, per Mike Florio via Dov Kleiman, is a trade to the Washington Commanders.

After the troubled and controversial Daniel Snyder finally sold them to billionaire investor Josh Harris and basketball legend Magic Johnson, the Commanders are seemingly starting off with a clean slate, and this could be an opportunity for them to stock their team with the best available men.

They have essentially a rookie quarterback in Sam Howell, who played in and started just one game in 2022 and has 2,146 passing yards and 13 touchdown passes on a 66.9 percent completion rate so far this year.

Washington has a 3-5 record, and a playoff berth may be out of the question, but perhaps adding Belichick and a couple of studs this offseason could put them back in the postseason.

During Snyder’s tenure from 1999 through last season, the franchise made the playoffs only six times, but under Jack Kent Cooke, their previous owner, it was one of the NFL’s most successful franchises, winning three Super Bowl championships in the 1980s and early 1990s.
