Insider Notes Chase Claypool’s Dreadful Numbers In Chicago
Midway through the 2022 season, the Chicago Bears felt they needed to add another weapon to their offense for quarterback Justin Fields to utilize, so they sent a 2023 second-round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for wide receiver Chase Claypool.
During his tenure with the Steelers, Claypool was regarded as one of the top young receivers in the entire NFL.
But since joining the Bears last season, ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently shared that Claypool’s production out on the field wasn’t anywhere close to what it was when he used to suit up for Pittsburgh.
Chase Claypool had 18 catches for 191 yards and one TD in 10 games during his time with the Bears. Chicago was 0-10 in those games.

For anyone who doesn’t realize how low Claypool’s per-game averages were with Chicago, he was averaging less than two catches, fewer than 20 receiving yards, and almost no touchdowns per contest in a Bears uniform.
Looking back at the trade between Chicago and Pittsburgh last season, it’s very clear that the Steelers got the better end of the deal.
For whatever reason, Claypool was never able to find a fit in the Bears’ offense during his tenure with the franchise.
During his three appearances with Chicago this season, he only managed to catch four of his 14 targets for 51 yards and one touchdown.
Claypool and Fields were never able to develop a connection and get on the same page, as the receiver only hauled in 41.9 percent of the passes that were tossed his way during his tenure with the Bears.
This year, Chicago eventually realized Claypool was more of a distraction for them than anything, and they ultimately decided to end their relationship with the young receiver by trading him to the Miami Dolphins on Friday.
