After years of toiling in mediocrity, the Detroit Lions appear to finally be ready to take the next step and compete in the NFC.

The Lions have assembled enough young talent on both sides of the field to hang with just about any team in the league and they have a great head coach in Dan Campbell who’s proved he can lead and motivate a roster.

Detroit took a massive leap forward in 2022 when they nearly made the postseason, finishing with a 9-8 record.

Now entering 2023, the Lions figure to be the favorites to win the NFC North though their first test is perhaps the most challenging one they’ll encounter during the year as they draw the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday Night Football.

The reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs are once again considered to be the favorites to win it all and it’s largely in part to Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes is coming off another spectacular season and when asked about what Detroit can do to slow him down Campbell gave a funny response via the Lions’ Twitter account.

Campbell jokes that the best way to stop Mahomes is to make him go backwards and keep him from throwing forward, a ridiculous suggestion that everyone knows couldn’t happen.

The Lions head coach then explains that Mahomes has a special feel for the game and that the Chiefs also have another weapon in Travis Kelce that can bend a defense.

Detroit’s defense is going to be tested right from the jump and it’ll be interesting to see if they’re up to the task.
