On Sunday, the defending National League champion Philadelphia Phillies completed a three-game sweep over the woeful St. Louis Cardinals, who received an unpleasant flashback to last year’s Wild Card Series.

One thing that the Cardinals are currently lacking is an ace at the top of their rotation, more specifically, one who can generate swings and misses.

This offseason, they’ll be searching for somebody who can fill that role.

Yesterday, they were held scoreless for seven innings by Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola, who struck out nine Cardinal hitters and will be a free agent this winter.

On Twitter, St. Louis sports radio host Brandon Kiley made a prediction that Nola will sign in St. Louis, while asking fans what they thought of the potential “future ace.”

Nola has had the Cardinals’ number in recent years.

In April of 2021, he pitched a complete-game shutout against the Cards in Philadelphia.

Last year, he pitched 6.2 innings in Game 2 of the Wild Card series, holding the Cardinals scoreless as the Phillies eliminated their former postseason nemesis.

But the addition of Nola, if that is the route the Cards decide to go, would be a big one for the team as they hope to rebuild their pitching staff and return to World Series contender status, something they haven’t had since the mid-2010s.

Granted, it’ll take more than just Nola, but he would be a huge addition for the team and might be the perfect pitcher to head up the rotation for 2024 and beyond as the Cardinals prepare for life without Adam Wainwright.
