The San Francisco 49ers shocked the NFL when they came out with their quarterback depth chart.

Brock Purdy was named the 49ers’ starting quarterback for the 2023 season, but the truly shocking news was that Sam Darnold was named the backup ahead of Trey Lance.

With Lance relegated as the team’s third-string quarterback, San Francisco quickly found a willing trade partner in the Dallas Cowboys to take him off their hands.

It’s a swift end to Lance’s 49ers tenure and a disappointing one considering his upside and talent.

While some will criticize how San Francisco handled Lance’s development, people like Pat McAfee applauded a couple of their key organization personnel for moving on when they did via his Twitter account.

“Man… the lack of ego from John Lynch and Shanahan here is truly rare,” McAfee tweeted. “They took a MASSIVE SWING to get this guy… the whole world was watching and reacting to it.. now they’re saying “Yeah… we got it completely wrong” officially Hopefully Trey figures it all out.”

Lance figured to be the face of the 49ers franchise when they traded three first-round picks in order to move up to No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft to take him.

When sinking so many resources in order to acquire a player, teams will typically play it out, but San Francisco decided to cut bait early and move in a different direction.

Both sides seem to be in better positions as the 49ers avoid having to answer questions about who will start while Lance will get a chance to rehab his value with the Cowboys.
