Analyst Praises Cowboys For Trey Lance Trade

For the Dallas Cowboys, the chance to acquire a former top-three overall pick in Trey Lance was too good to pass up as they struck a deal with the San Francisco 49ers to bring him in.

Lance fell out of favor with the 49ers during training camp and his future with the team was essentially over when they named him the third-string quarterback behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold.

For the Cowboys, Lance is an upside swing that only cost them a 2024 fourth-round pick.

Only giving up one Day 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft is excellent value for Lance and gives them a chance to develop another quarterback behind Dak Prescott.

The move might not pay dividends now, but investing in someone like Lance who could potentially play a role down the line is forward-thinking for Dallas.

It was a surprising move, to say the least, but Steve Wyche of NFL Network praised the Cowboys for seizing the opportunity to grab talent at the most important position in the league.

Wyche adds that the cost to acquire Lance makes it a low-risk move for the Cowboys.

The obvious bright side is that Lance is able to develop properly under Mike McCarthy who runs a similar offense to Kyle Shanahan and become a long-term piece for the Cowboys.

However, if the young signal caller pans out then Dallas will only have lost a singular pick at a point of the draft where prospects are hit and miss anyway.

All in all, it was good business for the Cowboys and it’ll be interesting to see how Lance looks on a new team.
