The term “Alabama Mac” has been applied to the iteration of quarterback Mac Jones who was seen at the University of Alabama.

Back then, he was playing fast and loose, and he helped lead the school to the 2020 national championship while winning a number of individual honors.

But after a promising rookie season in the NFL in which he made the Pro Bowl, he regressed in 2022, and now some are doubting whether he is a legitimate starting QB.

Journalist Albert Breer commented on the critics of the “Alabama Mac” moniker after Jones recently said he wants to get back to his old ways.

As a rookie in 2021, Jones injected hope into a New England Patriots franchise that had lost the legendary Tom Brady a year earlier.

He threw for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns while completing 67.6 percent of his pass attempts, which led some to consider him a dark-horse MVP candidate for the 2022 season.

Instead, his production fell to 2,997 yards and 14 passing touchdowns against 11 interceptions as the Patriots went 8-9 and missed the playoffs.

This year, he will have a little more help in the form of wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, who is fresh off helping the Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl, and former Pro Bowl running back Ezekiel Elliott.

But New England is facing a steep uphill battle in terms of getting back to the playoffs because of the insane depth throughout the AFC.

In just their own division, they have to deal with the Buffalo Bills, who are perennial contenders, an explosive Miami Dolphins team, and a loaded, high-profile New York Jets squad.
