The future of the quarterback position for the San Francisco 49ers seemed to be Trey Lance, whom the team traded up for in the 2021 NFL Draft to take third overall.

Lance was a tantalizing prospect coming out of college because of his arm and ability to make plays with his legs.

Dual-threat quarterbacks have become more and more sought after in the modern NFL, and Lance seemed to fit the mold.

However, Lance has been unable to put it all together during his time with the 49ers due to inconsistent play and injuries.

Lance’s best chance to establish himself as the face of the franchise was in 2022 when he was the unquestioned starter heading into the season, but he suffered an ankle injury in Week 2 that ended his year prematurely.

Now going into 2023, Lance was listed as the third-string quarterback behind Sam Darnold and Brock Purdy, prompting Nick Wright to harshly criticize how the 49ers handled Lance, via “The Herd with Colin Cowherd.”

“The process for the San Francisco 49ers over the last three years regarding Trey Lance has been the most unprofessional I’ve ever seen in pro sports,” Wright said.

Kyle Shanahan has proven time and time again that a player’s draft capital doesn’t matter and that performance does, so it’s not surprising that he chose Purdy as the team’s No. 1 over Lance.

However, Wright is right that young quarterbacks with that kind of pedigree typically have more opportunities to prove themselves.

It seems like Lance’s days in the Bay Area are numbered and teams will surely have interest in trying to realize his potential.
