Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves had a very good exhibition game against Team Germany in the lead-up to the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Not only did he score the most points for his team, but he also created a sensational dunk that caught the eye of basketball fans all over the world.

Edwards opened up about that the dunk, telling the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Twitter account that he hadn’t even planned on doing it.

“I didn’t think I was gonna dunk it. But, you know, it happened,” Edwards said.

Edwards noted that head coach Stever Kerr had instructed him to be in the middle of the offensive break and that’s when Mikal Bridges saw him and passed him the ball.

With a spur-of-the-moment decision, Edwards then dunked over Germany in a ferocious way.

This was a very important moment for Edwards because it proved that he really could be the lead player that Team USA needs in the weeks ahead.

The squad lacks a definitive superstar to lead the way.

Instead, it has a group of youthful role players.

For weeks now, people have speculated that Edwards could step up and become not only the biggest scorer for the team but also its de facto leader too.

Plays like this show how that could happen.

Edwards is coming off of a very hot season with his Timberwolves.

While it didn’t end with much postseason success, Edwards averaged 24.6 points and 5.8 rebounds a game.

He now looks ready and eager to be a breakout star for the national team.

If he is able to keep playing as he did the other day, Team USA might have a big chance of winning it all in the World Cup.
