Several Pitchers Had Impressive Debuts With Their New Teams
With the trade deadline having passed, several key players got a chance to play the starring role for their new teams on Thursday.
Most notably, starters who were traded had solid first games with their new teams.
Jack Flaherty drew the start for the Baltimore Orioles after arriving from the St. Louis Cardinals.
The right-hander pitched six innings, allowing just one run and striking out eight batters.
Max Scherzer turned in a quality start for the Texas Rangers, striking out nine, and Michael Lorenzen pitched an eight-inning gem in his first start with the Philadelphia Phillies.
On Twitter, MLB writer Bob Nightengale took note of these solid starts from pitchers with their new teams.
What a day for the starters who were moved at the trade deadline:
Jack Flaherty, #Orioles: 6 IP, 4 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 8 Ks, 6-1 win.
Max Scherzer, #Rangers: 6 IP, 7 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, 9 Ks, 5-3 win.
Michael Lorenzen, #Phillies: 8 IP, 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 5 Ks, 4-2 win.— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) August 3, 2023
It was certainly a banner day for newly acquired starters.
All three teams are in postseason contention and are hoping to make a run towards October.
And their newly acquired starters left a solid first impression.
Scherzer got off to a bit of a tough start for the Rangers, but ultimately settled in, giving them six innings and allowing three runs while striking out nine batters.
This is certainly a good sign for all three teams, as they look to make a push towards October with their revamped rosters.
Scherzer and Flaherty each have good postseason experience that could benefit the Rangers and Orioles, respectively.
Lorenzen also gives the defending National League champions a solid veteran arm.
All three starters made solid first impressions in their starts.
Now, they’ll be ready to help guide their teams to October.
