The Cardinals Are In Uncharted Territory This Trade Deadline
Normally at this time of year, the St. Louis Cardinals are buyers, looking to add pieces to supplement their roster for the stretch run of the season.
However, that is not the case this year.
This year has been an aberration for the Cardinals, who enter the month of August in last place in the NL Central with a record of 47-60.
The last time St. Louis finished in last place in the NL Central was all the way back in 1990.
Today marks the first time since 1995 that the Cardinals have entered August at the bottom of the NL Central, as was pointed out by Gateway Grinders on Twitter.

St. Louis has reached the postseason in four consecutive years.
They’ve won two NL Central titles and made two appearances as a Wild Card team.
However, the 2023 team appears to be on track for a different finish.
The last time the Cardinals missed the postseason was in 2018.
Today’s trade deadline will be a key day for them as they look to maximize their returns for some of their assets and build for 2024.
The Cardinals have made it clear that they intend to be competitive again next season.
The deadline comes at 6 p.m. Eastern time, which is 5 p.m. in St. Louis.
John Mozeliak, the team’s president of baseball operations, stated that after trading away Jordan Hicks, Jordan Montgomery, and Chris Stratton, they were not done making moves.
Any move the Cardinals make will be geared towards next season, as they are already out of postseason contention this year.
