The second half is actually going to be more important than people think in Queens.

It should help the Mets determine who has a future in the organization and who doesn’t.

It’s a perfect opportunity to give MLB-ready prospects such as Brett Baty, Mark Vientos, Francisco Alvarez, and others all the playing time they can handle.

It’s important to know that before making any decisions on the future of the franchise.

If the Mets’ youngsters develop into bona fide contributors, there is a path to make a couple of splashes in free agency and compete in 2024.

If they don’t like what they see from this point until the end of the regular season, they could use 2024 as another developmental year, stock up on prospects through trades and the draft, and make a serious run in 2025.

In any case, this team should be competitive in one or two years: highly competitive.

2023 is now unrealistic, but the future got a bit more exciting for Mets fans even if some of them still don’t realize it.

Luisangel Acuna, Drew Gilbert, Ryan Clifford, Marco Vargas, Ronald Hernandez, and Justin Jarvis is quite a haul.
