Colin Cowherd Comes To Mac Jones’ Defense

After superstar quarterback Tom Brady took his talents to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New England Patriots were stuck in a difficult situation as they had to replace arguably the greatest player at the position in NFL history.

There’s no way to do that, as anyone they brought in would be a considerable downgrade, even though Brady was in the twilight of his career, but the Patriots tried and ended up with Cam Newton and rookie Mac Jones.

After Newton flamed out as the starter, legendary head coach Bill Belichick chose to roll the dice with Jones under center, and it worked as the first-year player earned Pro Bowl honors for his efforts.

Unfortunately, the success didn’t carry over to his sophomore season with the team, as Jones really struggled, but Colin Cowherd believes it was more due to the situation in New England at the time and not the player, via “The Herd with Colin Cowherd.”

Last season, the Patriots decided not to replace Josh McDaniels by not hiring an offensive coordinator, which turned out to be a bad decision for New England as they were a mess offensively.

That’s probably not the best move with a second-year quarterback still trying to prove his worth and follow up a Pro Bowl season.

In 2023, the Patriots are turning back the clock a bit by bringing in Bill O’Brien to run the offense, and that might be their best move of the offseason, as it could unlock Jones’ potential and prove why he should be the starter under center as Cowherd suggests.

For Belichick’s sake, it better be the right move for the Patriots, as he could be on the hot seat in 2023.
