Back in 2008, in the first game of the NFL season for the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, superstar quarterback Tom Brady suffered a major knee injury and was knocked out of the game.

Ultimately, Brady’s suffered a season-ending knee injury right out of the gate, which immediately derailed the season for the Patriots and left the NFL with a season that was not as entertaining without the face of the league on the field.

As a result of the hit on Brady by Bernard Pollard, the league banned hitting quarterbacks below the knee and essentially changed the way the game is played with an emphasis on keeping quarterbacks healthy.

Although there was plenty of backlash around the league from some of the best defensive players, quarterbacks loved the change to the rules, and the league has gone on to become safer and safer for star players under center ever since.

Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently talked about the state of the league, and he thinks the NFL is safer to play in now than it was a decade ago, as he told Nate Burleson of CBS.

With so much coming out about CTE and the brutal toll playing football can have on players’ bodies after they retire, addressing safety in the game has become something the league is concerned about, but it doesn’t seem to be anywhere near enough.

Although Mahomes and his peers at the quarterback position are okay with where the league is headed in terms of safety, others would beg to differ, with more needing to be done, especially after the on-field incident with Damar Hamlin last year.
